[Download Mp3] – “Watch BTS of Raat Gaey”
Artist: Zoe Viccaji
Song: Raat Gaey – Late into the night —
Lyricist: Sabir Zafar
Language: Urdu
Song Info:
Set in today’s world, Zoe Viccaji addresses the everlasting existential nature of life through the voice of a woman in search of answers in the night. A song that is theatrical in tone and reminisces of a time where Noir met Jazz, Zoe had originally penned the lyrics down in English as the song was titled ‘Quarter to Three’. Upon her musical journey, Zoe feels this song was a tipping point for her, as it reflected a time where she herself was unsure of her path and found the night on the receiving end of her questions. Being of a universal theme, the song was later translated into Urdu to become ‘Raat Gaey’ and the song’s musical arrangement was further worked upon by Vladimir Nikolov from Macedonia, lending the essential deep Jazz elements that the song required, as performed by the musicians in Belgrade, Serbia. ‘Raat Gaey’ presents a pure jazz song sung in Urdu with an almost anachronistic feel as one imagines the song being sung onstage in what could be the 50’s or 60’s demonstrating that not only does a genre such as Jazz remain timeless but can also be boundless in its expression.

Lyrics:
raat gaye
Late into the night, as morning approaches
aise men jaane kyoon hoon jaagati
I don’t know why I remain awake
kaun hoon main
Who am I?
kaun hoon
Who am I?
kahaani kya miri
What is my story?
kaise kahoon
How can I explain?
main jo dikhti hoon waisi naheen
I am not what I appear to be
kaun hoon main
Who am I?
kaun hoon
Who am I?
kahaani kya miri
What is my story?
yih milna julna
This companionship
saare rishte naate
All these relationships
faani hai yih zindagi
This life is merely transitory
khayaalon rangon sapnon se bhi aage
Beyond thoughts, and colours, and even beyond dreams
mujh ko jaana hoga
That’s where I need to go
jo bhi sochen waisa hota naheen
Things don’t really turn out the way you think they will
naheen
They don’t really….
subhon men
In the mornings
dekha ab tak jo naheen
All the things I have not yet seen
dekh paaoongi main abhi
Now I’ll be able to see
jeewan men main ne jaana jo naheen
All the things I’ve never known in life
jaan jaaoongi main kabhi
Someday I’ll be able to know
subhon men
In the mornings
dekha ab tak jo naheen
All the things I have not yet seen
dekh paaoongi main abhi
Now I’ll be able to see
jeewan men main ne jaana jo naheen
All the things I’ve never known in life
jaan jaaoongi main abhi
Now I’ll be able to know
