Ali Azmat is a name that hardly needs an introduction. Possibly one of the most prolific of rock musicians in Pakistan today with albums spread across both his career as the lead singer for the rock band Junoon as well as his solo work, Ali Azmat remains a key player in what is known to the modern world of Pakistani music. A true artist, Ali’s trajectory as a musician led him towards pushing the boundaries of eastern and western musical tunings, exploring the art of lyrical satire and delving into the rabbit hole of experimental social commentary – for which he has received much critical acclaim.
On the way musical fusion has developed in the world as a growing trend, Ali had to say:
‘Its there; its now about the flavors. Peter Gabriel did it first with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and it took off from there. It ended up happening so many times that it became a part of the overall Western culture also. It accepted that Sound and Fusion became accepted. Similarly, we have been tuning western instrumentation onto our own music.’
Ali Azmat returns to Coke Studio after his appearance on the very first season in 2008 where he collaborated with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan on the mega hit ‘Garaj Baras’. In his arsenal, this time he brings with him compositions that represent both the whimsical and the existential – songs that stand as a collective epitome of Ali Azmat.
