The new PML-N led Pakistani Government has imposed huge taxes on foreign films and dramas, in order to discourage airing of foreign material and promote local content and industry.

While announcing the new budget in National Assembly, Pakistan’s new finance Minister Ishaq Dar proposed withholding tax of Rs. 100,000 on each episode of foreign drama serial. According to him, Foreign features films (including bollywood and hollywood movies) will be charged with Rs. 1 million tax each.

It should be noted here that Pakistani Artists had earlier blasted over foreign dramas . On the other hand, the imports of foreign films including Bollywood and Hollywood movies were supporting local cinema industry and attracting huge number of Cinema Goers. While this new tax on foreign content would stop the import of turkish soaps, it can also hurt the local cinema industry again which just started flourishing back again, due to foreign movies.
